Reflections on a Summer of Joy & Discovery

Hey Peepa!

It's Colleen, your friendly neighbourhood Artistic Director. Right now, I'm feeling a sprinkle of nostalgia, a pinch of exhaustion, and a generous helping of joy. I'd like to share what we've been up to this Summer. Back in May, we launched our FIFTH edition (OMG) of the summer company, funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program, supported by two local foundations. I seriously love this initiative. Did you know... According to my calculations...

The Summer Company has employed 52 youth artists, supplying them with 13,266+ hours of meaningful work since we launched in 2018? Wow.

Well, anyway... One of the things the Summer Company did this year was a series of "Vlogs," AKA video blogs. Created by videographer & dancer Kaitlyn Seibold, with voiceovers by Sierra Household, these short videos brought audiences behind the scenes. In this blog, I'll be sharing all four in the series. Whether you're interested in joining the summer company someday, you're a Frog fan, or you're just curious about what we've been up to, these quick clips are fun to watch. They also demonstrate the depth, and breadth of the work we accomplished together. Happy watching!

Ah, wait - do you prefer audio?

Our pal Bri Clarke's most recent (Art)versations podcast featured 2022 Summer Company member Katie Adams-Gossage. In this episode, Bri chats about Katie's experience as a member of Frog in Hand’s 2022 summer company, the cast’s favourite moment from “War of the Worlds Reimagined”, how clown training allowed Katie to be vulnerable, Katie's SummerWorks Lab double bill with Frédérique Perron, and stepping away from pre-determined dance rules while in creation.

And now, to the Frog Vlogs!

Oh - stay tuned to this blog, and our social media channels, because we've got some SERIOUS news to share with y'all very soon...

Land Acknowledgement

We are privileged to work, live and play on the traditional territories of the Anishinabek, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat peoples - Treaty 13A territory. This territory is included in the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, which is an agreement to peaceably share and care for the land and its resources. We understand the standard of living we enjoy here in Canada is a result of thousands of years of stewardship by the original inhabitants and the inequitable taking of the land from them. We acknowledge that in order to have reconciliation, we must first understand truth; we commit to move forward in an effort to achieve both. Our CoFounders, Colleen and Noelle, are settlers from Welsh, Ukrainian and English roots, and their heritage is but one piece of the tapestry that is Frog in Hand. Frog in Hand is a collective of artists with diverse backgrounds and histories, heritages and family stories of their own.

We are all Treaty People. On September 30th each year we mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Every day we are mindful of broken covenants and we strive to make this right. We commit to collaboration based on the foundational assumption that Indigenous Peoples have the power, strength, and competency to develop culturally specific strategies for their communities. We are dedicated to honoring Indigenous self-determination, history, and culture, and are committed to moving forward in the spirit of reconciliation and respect with all First Nation, Metis and Inuit people.
